Getting Started
BIOLOGY STUDENTS:
·You will need the following:
·The class textbook. You may write in your book. It must be covered with papel lustre which is the same color as the lab notebook (below) and labeled with your name and group.
A Blue spiral notebook
·A folder with a pocket or clip for handouts
·Homework assignment book (you may use your iPad)
··The lab manual: You will find a copy of the manual in Algebraix. You must print out the pages and have them bound to make your manual. The cover must be the color of your group.
·1A:Green; 1B: Yellow; 1C: Orange
For Biology: A 100% cotton lab coat with your name sewn over the pocket
·What you do not need:
·What you do not need: ·Cell phones ·Backpacks, Candy, gum, food or drink ·Red pens
Classroom Community
·Our classroom is a community. In our community, we have rules to help us get along with each other.
·Our class rules are:
·1. Be prepared – bring your notebooks, books and something to write with everyday. While I am setting up for class you should be getting out your books, notes, etc. and be ready to work.
·2. Be attentive – success in this class depends on YOU. Listen, learn, take notes, PASS.
·3. Be courteous – do not interrupt class, do not annoy your teacher or classmates.
·4. Be respectful – respect others in the class and their property. Do not touch things that do not belong to you.
·5. Be still – do not get out of your seat without permission. Do not go to your lockers during class.
Homework
·There will be homework. It will be collected at 7:30 in the morning so don’t wait to do it at school!
·Usually, I will write the homework on the side of the board when I begin class. You will find your assignment for the day on Sesweb and on your class Weebly page as well.
This year I will have you send me your work at times on Algebraix. Pay attention to my instructions as to how you should be handing in your work.
·Sometimes your work at home will depend on how much work you completed in class.
·Work efficiently in class to avoid excess work at home.
Grading
Homework, labwork, project and class participation 30%
Consistently doing your homework and participating in class work is the best way to succeed.
My guarantee: If you do all your work you cannot fail my class.
Quizzes 10%
You will have a quiz once a week or at the end of each topic. There will be 5-6 quizzes for each trimester period.
Attendance 5%
Conduct 5%
Trimester and midtrimester exams 50%
There are 3 trimester exams and two midterm exams in the school year. These are one hour exams.
Absences
·It is very important to your success in this class to be here every day.
In the event that you are absent, you will need to make up your work.
·Homework is to be turned on the day you return to class. You are responsible for getting your homework assignment either from the web page or from a friend.
·Quizzes Since the lowest quiz is dropped, you can miss one with no problem. You may make arrangements with me to take a makeup quiz if you have missed more than one quiz.
·Trimester Exams. You will be given a makeup exam when you return to school, usually after you have finished with all your other exams.
You are responsible for getting your work and making it up.
Exams
Exemptions: To exempt the final exam you must have obtained a 9.5 or better average from the three trimester periods.
Justified absences :
1. an illness justified with a medical document
2. a sports competition with a document endorsed by the corresponding club or institution.
Makeup exam: Except in the case of a justified absence, a makeup exam will be graded out of 8 instead of 10 points.
Other Information
·Extra Credit
Throughout the year you will have the chance to obtain extra credit points for some work. Your points can be saved until you need them, to help raise your grade on your report card or to obtain passes.
·Bathroom/Hall Passes
You will be allowed 3 passes per trimester period (about 3 months) to go to the bathroom. Please pick an APPROPRIATE time to ask for a pass.
·Additional passes may be “purchased” with extra credit points.
